Technology and the Church: Facing Up to Facebook

Pragmatic Advice on the Nuts and Bolts of Using Web-based Tools and Social Networking to Support Your Congregations

New social networking technologies like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, photo-sharing, podcasting and blogs can be overwhelming. Dave Schroeder, a Chief Information Officer with an M.Div. and extensive non-profit experience explains these new technologies and shares practical advice on how to make them work for local churches on tight budgets.

 Questions for consideration:

  • Where do we get started on using social networking?
  • What are the best uses of each technology?
  • What sites and tools are your current members using?
  • What are the best ways to reach potential new members?
  • Who should manage social networking technologies?
  • How can we use new technologies inexpensively?

Dave Schroeder has served as a Chief Information Officer and Chief Technology Officer for several public and venture-capital based companies and has helped design and implement web sites for major companies such as Hertz, Starwood Hotels and Price-Waterhouse-Coopers. Dave has a BA from Swarthmore College and an MBA from Carnegie Mellon University with a focus on Management and Organizational Behavior. He also has an M.Div., magna cum laude, from Drew Theological School (United Methodist) and has attended Princeton and Chicago Theological Seminaries. Dave has extensive non-profit management experience and has taught classes for local pastors, staff and laity on web design and leveraging Internet technologies to support the local church.
